Loi Krathong Festival Isaan Thailand 2011.

We had the Thai festival Loi Krathong the other week and there were some pictures on the camera that Miss Noot had taken so I thought I would upload them.
Miss Benjawan Loi Krathong Isaan Thailand
Miss Benjawan was going to lead the parade for her village. She won Miss Noppamas Queen a few years back for the village and was helping out again.

These are also past winners from the village and taking part in the parade. Noot and Ben’s village won the Noppamas Queen 7 or 8 years in a row. Noot won in 2005 and Ben 2007 from memory.
Loi Krathong Lum Dancers Isaan Thailand
And another important part of the day and competition is Lum dancing.
Loi Krathong Isaan Thailand
Ben and her friend. I have always been of the opinion that the thick ugly white makeup they plaster on the girls takes away from their beauty. When I go to these things I never recognize any of the people I know. Thais think white is beautiful and an inch of makeup with red cheeks is beautiful. Where I think olive skin and no makeup if much better.
Nong Ja Loi Krathong Isaan Thailand
It was all too much for Nong Ja who needed a nap.

When I was browsing the pictures I thought this was a good shot. So I cropped it a little and fixed the colours and then uploaded it. I am lazy and couldn’t be bothered to Photoshop it. But the blue water pipe bugged the hell out of me so I had to.
Loi Krathong Isaan Thailand
To remove the pipe took without a word of a lie a minute. And I could have got away with some small details on the dress but cloned a few things and in under 3 minutes the picture was done. People think it is expensive but it isn’t as what you can do with Photoshop is pretty endless.
Loi Krathong Lum Dancing Isaan Thailand
The Lum dancing started. The village didn’t win.
Loi Krathong Isaan Thailand
There is also a Krathong competition on a larger scale than the ones that people float.

Loi Krathong Contestant Ban Tae Kow
What the evening is about is the beauty contest or Noppamas Queen. All the surrounding villages will have a girl represent them. When Noot did it there were 26 or so.

This girl is Ban Tae Kow’s representative is doing the traditional Thai greeting and thank you. She receives pencils as part of the fundraising. Each pencil is 20 baht.
Loi Krathong Highest Fundraiser
The winner of the fundraising.
Loi Krathong Noppamas Queen 2011
And the overall winner.
Miss Ben and Friend
Ben grabbed a picture with their representative who didn’t win but that is the way the cookie crumbles, as my mum would say. Ben looks so much better not covered in ghostly makeup if you ask me.
Miss Noot and Friend
And the banana girl wanted to get some of the action as well.

I agree with you about the ghostly makeup. Natural is so pretty with an olive complexion.

Never have seen such elaborate Krathongs, either. Beautiful!

Does this post mean you're coming back?!?!?

Please don't stop! :)

yup, i also agree with you about the excessive make-up. don't like it at all.

ms. ben does look so much better without all that pale make-up in that second to last photo. she is beautiful regardless though.

Yep, totally with you there, the girls are much prettier without the makeup. They are very pretty without the makeup.

Disagreement on the banana thing, though. Geez. :-)

You took some great pictures of those huge krathongs, as well as the general festivities. I like watching that choreographed group dancing...lots of practice must go into those performances.

I don't know anything about beauty pageants, but I think the girls/ladies photograph well either with or without that pancake makeup. In person, though, that heavy makeup is almost distracting, and [like you] I think the girls look better without it.

Great post!

Hey brunty,
This is Jon up here in Nakhom Phanom. Great to have you back!!! I totally agree with you on the ghostly makeup. I witnessed especially students when getting ready to perform a dance or an activity, they will overkill with the makeup. A lot of times I would actually jump from fright when I see my students dress up with the makeup overkill.
Regards to you family,
Jon
