This is how fines should be for idiots behind the wheel of a car.
A well known person for all the wrong reasons in Australia is facing up to four months in jail after allegedly being caught driving while suspended.
In Victoria, Australia with its new fine system the fines and punishments are good.
The charge for driving while suspended carries a fine of up to $4000 (120,000 Baht) or up to four months in prison for a first offence.
A second or subsequent offence carries a fine of up to $27,000 (620,000 Baht) or up to 24 months' imprisonment.
The chances of a gutless judge actually sentencing this person to jail is nil I would say, and I am sure the fine won’t really hurt him but hopefully he is caught a second time and then is locked up.
If only in Thailand fines were more like this, instead of 200 baht for no helmet, unlicensed, unregistered motorbike and so forth and made the fines like 10,000 baht, the morons you see riding and driving cars like buffoons may just improve, may but I doubt it.
Isaan drivers, especially in Ubon Ratchathani are nothing short of a fuc#ing atrocious, they seem to think they do not have to follow any law and just do as they please.
This doesn’t help as police do not enforce the road laws, only out in front of schools booking the same student for no helmet, license or registration for the 50th time.
I don’t understand how a person can ride/drive off without a helmet, license or registered vehicle in front of the police as this is illegal!
Many foreigners complain about the way Thais drive, it is their country and so forth but it also shows why their fatality rates are so high.
I am sure the Thais look at us foreigners and wonder why we drive as we do and why we shake our heads and actually toot our horns at times when some backwater retard decides to do whatever they like.
This is one thing that does amaze me, how you hardly ever hear a horn blown, I have seen some driving that would get people strung up by their short and curlies back in Australia, but here people just ignore it all but I am sure they must be saying under their breath, “you bloody idiot, where did you get your license? From a cereal box?”
When in reality they more than likely don’t have one, their license is 200 baht.

I agree with what you say about fines. I learned to drive a motorbike living in Vietnam - and i have the hospital bills to prove it - if you think Ubon is bad your living on a different planet - Ubon is OK compared to other countries in SE Asia. And also….most do have a licence - 500 baht from Khemmarat. Wearing a helmet is a joke - its a daytime deal. They know theres no police at night in Ubon - so no helmet and i would say most motorbike accidents are at night. The deal with not wearing a helmet (or rice cooker - as it was called in Vietnam) was woman didn't want to wear it..messed up the hair to attract the blokes / same deal with the blokes, it was too hot, nowhere to put it when you went for pho! Also when you parked the bike you got charged extra for a helmet. Also the helmet designs were unbelievably dull / not trendy, cool. What the Vietnamese did was introduce some really great / trendy helmet designs to attract young people to wear…..and increase the fine. The helmet design in Thailand are 10 years out of date…like the internet.
The short answer is yes! 200 baht doesn't hurt most people here. A friend recently incurred a fine for playing the wrong music CD in their cafe...50,000 Baht, talked them down to 15,000...I guess that foreign music can be down right dangerous!
Hey Brunty,
This is Jon up in Nakhon Phanom. Like everything you write, I have to agree with you on this one. My saying is that Thais drive with the thinking of opposite of comman sense law. Im glad my wife drives with common sense by doing things like stopping and looking first before entering streets and such. If she didnt she would be a murder victim of me!
I think.....no feel that Thai drivers got their licence from a cereal box. No......cutting it out would be too intelligent of a task. They assume their identification card is their driving license.
Keep up the good work.
Jon
Anon, Ubon is Ok, that is scary...
The illegal licence, beautiful.
Police at night at the same stops and that is it, never random patrols.
I would agree that many accidents would be at night as alcohol and racing takes over then.
I agree that a well designed and cool helmet might make kids wear them, might.
Snap, most Thais can scramble 200 baht and pick their licence up from the police station.
The music guys have been getting foreigners all the time and Thais. My brother in laws have ileegal cd, vcd and dvd stalls and every now and then these guys pop up with their hand out and then disappear again.
Hi Jon, I am not trying to be rude but Thais just don't have common sense.
Yes the licence would have to come already cut out and ready to go mate, using scissors and following dotted lines would be too much a challenge.
Thanks for dropping by.
