A Trip to an Ubon Ratchathani Dentist, Thailand.

I have been to the dentist here in Ubon three times. Two times I used a private dentist that isn’t far from my house. He is a Thai/Chinese man who runs the clinic and also a beauty salon. I had gone to have my teeth cleaned and checked and both times he done an excellent job. The price was cheap too, 700 Thai Baht to scrape and polish my fangs.

On Monday I went and made an appointment at the local government dentist, it isn’t free like the public hospitals but I was told it was cheap and the dentists were good. Here in Thailand do not be surprised if you cannot make an appointment for a specific time, this is normal.

The dentist is the pink marker, next to it is the fire station and at the back a street over is the main post office here in Ubon.

On Monday the dentist was booked out for the day but my name was written in a small book and I was told to go back on the 2nd being Thursday. What you do is turn up before they open at 8.30am and first in is first served. If you turn up and you are the fifth person there, that’s when you will be seen.

The dentist opens at 8.30am and I arrived at 8.10am and was first there. I filled out the card and then had a seat. A few more people turned up to see the doctors there and also for the dentist. A very young girl arrived with her mum and dad and she was also going to see the dentist. I was asked if the young girl could go first as it wouldn’t take long. 'No worries' I said.

I was called into the dentist at 8.45am and was met by the dental assistant and the dentist. Now there used to be a dentist who spoke very good English I was told but she is now in America. The ladies do not speak much English, virtually nothing.

Some questions were asked and I replied best I could and they then had me lying back in the chair and the dentist went to work. I hopped out of the dentist’s chair 40 minutes later and asked the dentist if there were any problems with my teeth.

I was happy to learn I still don’t need any filling or other work; I have made it 37 years with only cleaning so far, I’m happy about that. I made my way to the billing window with my piece of paper to pay my bill.

The bill came to 300 Thai baht, which is crazy! How can it be so cheap? I paid my bill and made my way home with my mouth feeling funny as all the plaque and other junk had been scrapped away from my teeth.

If you live near Ubon and want some work done on your teeth and at a very cheap price I recommend that you make your way here, make an appointment and have your teeth feel like new again.

I'm sorry that I don't have a phone number as my receipt doesn't have a number on it.

Brunty, before I left the US I went to a dentist for a estimate on full dentures as I had a parcle and very few teeth left , they gave me a price of $6.000 US dollars, I decided to wait till we moved to Thailand to see if I could get it done cheaper and a good job.Well I went to a goverment hospital with a denist section upstairs, like you put my name on a list and was told it could be six months till it was my turn as the King had a program in place to gine all seniors in Thailand ,new dentures. Well six mths later I got a call that my number had come up and to come in , in I went and after an exam was told they could do the job for 8,000 baht extractions and new dentures and all , I said go for it and that day they they took out eleven, teeth and said go home heal up and see you in one mth , back I went for a cast of my mouth, several more trips and finally, the real dentures which looked and felt good, I was happy , ready to pay 8,000 baht and the lady ask how old I said 64 she said wait , she came back 5 min later and said that because I was married to a Thai and had a visa to support wife , I qualified for the Kings program and my cost was 2,000 baht or $50.00 US dollars, what a deal , I have had them for 3 years not one problem and when we went back to the USA this summer noone could believe how good they looked, my brother had just had his done and had paid out of his pocket after the insurance payment 4,000.00 US dollars and mine looked as good and fit better than his , I love mine and he hates his says they rub blisters on his gums , mine never have. All I can say is "RETIRED IN THAILAND AND LOVING IT." Malcolm
Really glad you had a good experience and that they did a good job for you , hope you keep them ivory chompers for another 37,great post and as always lots of good pictures .

Dear Jason,

Yes, I also find dentists here in Ubon very good and resonably priced. I have had many crowns put on my teeth with no problems. I go to a little dentist in Warin because it is convenient.

I hope that you are working out on some of those exercises I sent you by email last week. Be lean.

Regards,

Michael Hare

Malcom, you saved a bundle of money compared to the US.

Noot goes to a hospital about 15klms away from our house for dental work, it is free.

The first time she went to the dentist with me but then she said that she can get it for free, so why pay? I don't argue and just let her do as she wants. They do a very good job there.

I am happy your teeth have given you no problems, not like your brother.

Michael, the dentists in Ubon are good and from my experience cheap. Back home the last visit to the dentist cost me just under $80 Aus dollars.

Can you email me the exercises, I cannot find the email. I have looked but to no avail.

Ubon Dentist story.

Back in 94-96 I used to go to a lady dentist in Ubon near the river. When my appointments were mid to late morning weekdays she took ages to drill and fix the teeth up. Long pauses between drilling and filling.

The reason. She had the TV on and was watching the footnotes at the bottom of the screen with the STOCK EXCHANGE numbers. Thais bet (gamble) on these numbers and changes. So every few minutes or so she was on her phone placing bets. I speak Thai but with all the stuff in mouth I couldn't say anything. Stuff the patient- there is money to made.

I changed my dentist.

Regards,

Michael

Michael, that is a classic of a story. Thais do love to gamble but that is just crazy.

Thanks Franky. I will drop you an email.
