The other night I ventured with some friends to our newest hotel, The Sunee Grand Hotel and Convention Centre. I have been here twice now, the first time my pictures were terrible and I was too embarrassed to upload them and report about the hotel.

The building has actually been standing for a long time, it had previously been a hospital which didn’t go to plan because of the economic crash in 1997, and it became a clinic, then into restaurants, a mansion and even a furniture store. Now its final refit is in place.

The owners have created a top class hotel, which is really beautiful and long overdue for Ubon Ratchathani. Ubon has other hotels, but this new addition has blown them out of the water.
The hotel is going to offer world class convention facilities, state of the art IT technology. The biggest room seats 5,000 people and there are also 11 meeting rooms for hire. Also adjoining the hotel is the new, City Mall Shopping Centre. This is still being finished as is the hotel.
The hotel will be completed in March or April but has been operating for a while now. I actually ate in the restaurant at least a month ago. At the moment 79 rooms are available to be booked and the rest are expected to be completed by late March, early April. Then there will be a total of 219 rooms.
Of course there are swimming pools and apparently a Water Fun Park, spas, health club, fitness centre and of course massage. To read about the hotel go to their site by clicking on the link above.
These are just a few of the pictures of the hotel.

These are the stairs leading down to the hotel foyer and restaurant from the 1st floor car park.

This is one of the beautiful water features that greet you.

This is looking from the foyer to the car park.

The main water feature and sunken dining area

These chairs are super soft in the foyer area; you can sit and enjoy a drink.

And the reception, I really like the use of the colour fabrics in the background.

There is live music in the foyer, last time I ate here a piano player sang Thai and foreign music. It is really a relaxing setting.

I really like the lighting in the reception; it is different from what I have seen before.

This is known as Barista Pan Bakery Corner, there were no cakes to be seen though.

I love this Japanese style changing screen, I am not sure if the writing in Kanji or Chinese writing, I am sure someone will steer me correctly.

Looking at one of the formal dining tables.

Spicy tuna salad.

A spicy seafood salad, delicious.

This is a Chinese dish apparently; the dipping sauce went perfectly with them, delicious. They were like a spring roll.

Golden French fries.

Chicken burger.

My 3 happy dates. There were 7 people, 7 main meals, 3 shared dishes, water and a strawberry smothie and a bottle of really nice red wine. The total bill was 1,750 Thai Baht. Very reasonable.
The restaurant is open and the service is top notch. The menu is extensive but at this time all that is offered is not available. Most of the foreign menu like steaks and roasts are not being stocked, this can be expected. At this present time many people don’t know the hotel is open for business.
When fully up and running the hotel will offer a buffet breakfast, lunch and dinner. The full menu is impressive and I do look forward to sampling some of the dishes that will be on offer.
The staff is very attentive but not overbearing as in some restaurants and hotels. The 3 shared dishes being the tuna salad, spicy seafood salad and the spring roll thingies were excellent. My chicken burger was good. Noot had Chinese kale with pork in an oyster sauce and she said it was okay. Another guest ordered a Pad Thai but this very strangely came without the thick noodles.
This is a very young operation, with time and when all is completed will become the hub of Ubon. There is even a McDonalds that will open soon in the City Mall, Ubon’s first. If this is a good or bad thing, I am not sure.
I am planning on returning this weekend to photograph the rooms, meeting areas, convention centre, pools and so forth.
It might seem like just another hotel to many but for Ubon this is distinctive, to what is offered now. I hope that it does create work for many people and bring more businesses and tourists to the North-east of Thailand.

Spooky!
Just yesterday I was looking at the hotel website and thought to myself, I should do a review on that place and made a mental note to myself to search your site to see if you had already done one!
The food looks great and for 10 plates + wine I am guessing that each main only cost about 120 baht, if so - that is great value!
I can't wait to get there.
Got your message thanks and will call you this evening, I hope that is okay.
i'll have to check this place out next time i'm in Ubon.
Hi Andrew, you should do a review as everyones tastes are different. The main dishes can be well under 120 Baht depending on what you order. The smoothie and 5 bottles of water came to around 100 Baht. If you wanted to you could eat there for as cheap as 200 Thai Baht.
MJ it is very nice for Ubon, I personally when I stay somewhere don't care to much about razzle and dazzle as long as there is a decent bed in the place. I like value for money, I like to spend my money on products rather than padding a hotel owners pocket :)
Thanks for this great report (and also the other page about the rooms) and the great photos. Unfortunately, the homepage doesn't come with nice photos. Looks like a nice hotel, I guess I will book it for December! Greetings, Florian. ps.: I added a weblink to this page in a travel community (trivago). Hope it's ok.
