A dentist, cold weather and baked beans on toast, Thailand.

Well I lasted the week with my sore back. My week has ended as we have a holiday tomorrow as it is Teacher’s Day. My back has improved leaps and bounds, so maybe the drugs and also the stretching must be working. I would say it is 60% good and 40% dodgy. I still get the odd shooting pain at times and standing for prolonged times usually brings on a good ache. Apart from that all is good.
Compressors
At school today the compressors were set-up outside our small school clinic or sickbay. The dentists had returned to work on student’s teeth.
Kids waiting for dentist
Inside some students were waiting for their turn on the dentist’s bed.
Happy students
Two students weren’t in the least bit worried and had huge smiles for the camera.
Dentist at work
It is good to see this project that looks after the kids teeth for free. I read a report the other day from the Thai health department and their concern in the rapid increase in tooth decay in younger children.
Say argh
The dentists come to the school at least 4 times a year. It is stupidly cheap to go to the dentist here in Isaan. When I had my teeth cleaned it cost 500 Baht and Noot’s cost 300 Baht as hers were a lot cleaner and much easier to do.
The magic gun
This looked like a magic gun of some kind.

It has been bloody cold here in Ubon, cold as in, 10-12 degrees at night. It feels much colder with the icy breeze that has been blowing. I have been sleeping in shorts, shirt and socks under a duvet and blanket.

The house is shut up tight. All the windows are closed and when you have to go outside you are rugged up like an Eskimo. I wear a beanie or balaclava and gloves when we venture out.
Baked beans
A had these little babies for dinner last night.
Baked beans, eggs and toast
I hadn’t had baked beans for a long, long time. With some toast and two eggs it was a real winner on a cool night. Tonight I steamed a truckload of vegetables with a couple of sausages. Good food to warm a cool tummy on these winter nights.

Throw some "canadian back bacon" on that, and you have my Mom's quickie welsh rarebit.

It's amazing the parallels for us farang living here in Isaan.

Yes it's cold here in Surin and I too have done my back in... picking up a child. Thankfully I haven't had sciatica like you but my lower back is very painful when I stand up and I'm walking round like I'm an old guy of 62. (And I'm not 62 until next month.)

I stick with Ibuprofen/Neurofen as a safe painkiller/anti-inflammatory though once in UK when in total agony with it was prescibed Co-Codamol 500g which is mix of codeine and paracetamol. This killed the pain like nothing I've ever had before.

Ubon's not far... we should get together! Meanwhile keep entertaining us with your great blog.

Incidentally I get lots of hits referred from your site to my blog at www.thaigirl2004.blogspot.com for which many thanks.

Gary, some crispy bacon would have been a great addition indeed. It is hard to get here in Ubon. You can buy it but is very expensive.

Andrew, I am sorry to hear you hurt your back as well. I wish I was somewhere near 62, I am 37.

Yes, Neurofen is a safe painkiller and can be sourced easily here.

I wonder is the Codamol is like a Condeine forte I had when I fractured my sternum. They were really good painkellers.

I hope we can meet in the near future, I have a good break coming up soon and will have plenty of spare time.

I am happy that some people are venturing your way from this blog. I really enjoy your blog, it is excellent and just like to share what I enjoy reading with my readers.

Thanks for stopping by and commenting.

in Taiwan, beans are dessert fare only. is that the case in Thailand too?

I called my mom last week and she said "Oh, it is so cold in Ubon, like 10-12C." Compare to Wisconsin where I ended up, it is not that cold. I would say my most famous months are December and January. The temp. during those months is just perfect!!

I found some good bacons and baked beans in a big glosary store, like Tesco Lotus. I would say, they have the reasonable prices for those stuff because they are not made in Thailand. :P

Lucky you, the cost for dental service there is just so cheap. My host father has to pay 285$ for teeth cleaning and the regular checking!!

MJ, beans here too are a desert fare. They are usually soaked in sweet syrups, coconut milk and condense milk. I really enjoyed the baked beans, it was a trip down memory lane from when I was a kid. It funny how food you used to eat so much as a kid you stop and forget about it. Also being in Asia doesn't help I suppose.

Hi Rin, 10-12 with a really fresh breeze, it was cold my friend, even for an expat like me. Bacon can be bought at Tesco and Big C but the price is a little steep, I am a miser :)

Dental work back in farang land is daylight robbery. I had caps put on my teeth after they were smashed in a car accident. It was fuc*ing insane the price. I was happy when the person at faults insurance finally reimbursed me. I scrape, floss and clean is like $25-30 Aus dollars.
