A Paranoid farang in Thailand.

Well, maybe I was a little paranoid about the repair shop where I had left our car to be fixed, I was a little worried as it didn’t look like the best place for the job to be done and I had brought up some questions to try and ease my mind.

Today we went to pick the car up, I was being hopeful, not negative and I was pleasantly surprised to find the car looking really good. The damage wasn’t huge by any means; it was just some deep scratches on the back passengers door and panel. It looks great and the colour at this moment is a perfect match.

So I apologize to the workshop at this time as the job looks great and I hope that the workmanship stays that way with time as well. Sometimes us farangs are maybe a little too mistrustful of Thai ways, but after being bitten and seeing the way things are done in Thailand it’s hard not to be that way.

So after a week of things going the wrong way there has been a better outcome at this time.

Oh and a pleasant surprise was that the price was only 5,000 Thai Baht, fully covered by insurance and Noot thinks this is very expensive for the small amount of damage. When I told her that back in farang land you would pay at least 12,000 Thai Baht plus for this job to be done, she looked horrified.

Now she understands why I said “full comprehensive insurance”, Noot thought 16,700 Baht was insane but now she knows this isn’t the case especially if you needed to fix some major damage and what that would cost.

I am glad to hear that they did a good job for you. I have read many accounts of people getting bad service in Thailand but i have not experienced it yet. I will tell you what i have experienced.

I brought my brother in laws 8 year old Honda Civic into the Honda dealer in Ubon because while i was using it I thought that the air should have been colder. I went alone...without my Thai wife. They took the car in immediately in-spite of the fact that every bay was full. They added refrigerant and would not accept payment for their service.

I had my Canon camera break while in BKK. It was not in warranty but i took it in for repair at the Canon repair center. They told me the CCD had failed and because the camera was 3 years old they had to get a new one from Singapore. They gave me a NEW better camera for free....I didn't ask for it but they insisted.

I have always been treated better in Thailand than I am in the States. Maybe I am just lucky ( I really am by the way!) or maybe i am just accustomed to the low level of customer service in the States.

Hi Mike.

You have been lucky and received good service, in over 3 years i have only experienced this a few times.

First with all things being a toaster and an iron. The supermarket where hopeless where I bought the products but I eventually won out.

Second, a computer monitor. It died under warranty, had to be sent to Bangkok, they fixed it and sent it back and it didn't work. It went back to Bangkok again. 11 weeks later I was called and told they would refund my money.

The monitor cost 4,090 Thai Baht and I had the receipt. They told me they would refund 2,700 as it was just over a year old. As you can probably imagine there was some very colourful language used.

I contacted LG in headquaters and sent emails to LG Bangkok and also called them about 10 times speaking to a suppossed manager. Eventually they refunded the entire amount.

These weren't anything major but were bad customer service that Thais generally accept.

Customer service in Australia like America is hard to find, most people in Australia think they have the worst jobs in the world and act as though the weight of the world is on their shoulders.

Thanks for comenting Mike.
