Mother's Day Thailand 2008.

On Monday we celebrated Mother’s Day a day early at our school. There was a religious side of the day first and then it was time for the mums to take centre stage.
Virgin Mary
We had Mother Mary or the Blessed Virgin Mary on the stage. This is the first time I have noticed this in the three Mother’s Days I have attended. I only found out that Assumption, our schools name is named after the ascent of Mary to heaven at her death when I was researching a few months back about other information. I am very ignorant. From what I understand Mary’s birthday is celebrated on the 8th of September.
HM Queen Sirikit
Also on the stage was a picture of HM Queen Sirikit of Thailand, it is her birthday on the 12th of August and this also doubles for Mother’s Day.
Students in the hall
All the younger students from primary 1 to 6 were seated waiting for the ceremony to start.
Director Sadka
Our school Director opened the celebration by making a speech to Mary.
VIP Guest
A VIP guest then did the same for HM the Queen.
Thai Dancers
Now every ceremony has dancing and the girls looked marvelous as per usual and done a very beautiful but long traditional dance.
Giving Birth
Now, the best part of the opening was a show put on by the senior students. It was a classic. Here a young lady gives birth to a baby son. The sound effects had the young students laughing their heads off.
Thai Boys Fighting
She pleads with him to stop and be a good boy but he dismisses her and treats her like shit, just like real life. He then leaves school gets a girlfriend and goes to a bar gets drunk, gets into a fight over his girlfriend and ends up injuring another guy badly.

He gets arrested and his mum goes to the police station and he is still being an ass, the police tell the mum what he is charged with and that bail is 10,000 Baht, she can’t post bail and he ends up in jail.

In the end he ends up becoming a good boy, a good ending but in real life it probably doesn’t happen too often. It was a very entertaining show and I enjoyed it a lot even if the young 5, 6 or 7 year olds didn’t understand everything.
Paying Respect
Finally after waiting a long, long time the parents and children had centre stage. Here mums are being paid respect by their sons and daughters.
Paying Respect 2
The children give their parents a flower garland and then do a deep traditional Thai bow or Wai. The parents usually offer some words of love and cuddles and kisses.
Paying Respect 3
Some students get very emotional and end up in tears, this year there were not that many. In previous years there are usually students all over the place sobbing.
Tears
Here a young girl is wiping some tears away.
Older Students
Even the older students offered respect to their mothers, these are year 8 students.

So that was Mother’s Day 2008, it was way too long for the young kids, they were forced to try and sit still and be quiet for 2 hours, an impossible task.

Brunty,
Those photos of the kids showing respect are fantastic. Man, that shows the true love of the family there; it is amazing.

Franky the young kids take the day very serious and really like paying respect, the older kids are too shy to do this, but this would be like most kids in the world.

Hope the ankle is healing well mate.
