Thailand. BBQ with friends.

The other night I finally had a BBQ at my house and invited a few friends over. I bought the cooker a little while back and had given it a small test run but this was its first big test.

We bought small mollusks called hoy, chicken, pork fillet and pork ribs and our friends were bringing some prawns and another Thai favourite called Kanom Gin which is a noodle and you mix with a fish sauce and some vegetables, oh, and of course, papaya salad

We marinated the pork and chicken in different marinades. I did one set of ribs in a honey and soy sauce and they were very popular. A god surprise was from my Pommy mate John who had bought some French bread and made some garlic butter to make garlic bread. It was bloody delicious.

I had lit the fire a good 30 minutes before my friends were to arrive so it would give it time to catch on and then die down a little to a good grilling heat. The big pieces of chicken went on first and then the pork followed.

I stole my friend’s hamburger recipe The NH Bushman American hamburgers and the only little thing I added was a splash of Worcestershire Sauce. They did cook really well and with the cob style bread I bought and sliced and then filled with salad and a lovely mayonnaise sauce, I really enjoyed them and also others as well.

Now John and his wife Da brought along some prawns and to my horror when I went into the kitchen they had all been boiled. I still put some on the BBQ to give them the BBQ’d taste.

This is a really bad picture of the fresh salad we had to accompany our food, sorry.

This is the hoy or mollusks, kanom gin and papaya salad I mentioned before. Thais eat them all by the bucket load.

The girls were enjoying themselves a lot, food, gossip, food and gossip so it would be hard to not have fun. This is from left to right; in black is Oom, in yellow is John’s wife Da and in red is Keith’s wife Sarah.
Here they are playing up for the camera, must have been the one can of beer they drank, actually Sarah doesn’t drink.

Now the surprise of the night was pommy John. He disappeared for a few minutes and returned dressed in a Thai style sarong that you see the men in the village wearing. He also had a Thai instrument called a ‘can’. It is used to play Mor Lum music which is very popular here in Isaan country.

He was charming Sarah off her seat as you can tell by her huge smile. It was a very funny moment.

Well we all ate and ate and there was still so much food left and I over catered for the night. That’s okay as BBQ meat always tastes better the next day I think anyway.

All up it was a great night with friends and I actually had a few glasses of beer with Keith and John. Keith had to leave as his youngest daughter was tired but John and I kicked on just chatting as you do at these things until midnight and his wife pleaded with him to go home.

I am looking forward to more nights like this in the near future.

Brunty.

Hey MJ. I finally got you back for all the times you have put all those lovely food pictures on your blog.

Last night looking at the Indian food pics I wanted to eat them off the screen of the computer.

Looked mouth watering my friend.

It was a good night and we all had fun and will be doing it again soon.

I am going to cook a roast in the cooker and also try doing a pizza.

I love Worcestershire sauce and even put a tiny amount on my fried rice and also like dipping fried chicken, sticky rice and many other things into it.

I marinaded some of the pork fillet in honey and soy sauce with garilc crushed up. This was delicious and also a ground pepper pork steak with a tiny splash of worcestershire which my friend ate most of and then opoligised for doing so.

John is a classic Englishman and a wicked sense of humour and could tell you a million stories about his life so far. Very entertaining and a riot at times.

I look forward to the day we meet and eat my friend.

Life is hard here mate just like Taiwan.

Brunty you just reminded me of one time i was doing some grilling and i used Suntory Whisky and honey for a glaze on my Beercan Chicken. it came out great!

i'm going to attempt to do a pizza in the camp oven one of these days. it's been raining here a lot lately and believe it or not we have another typhoon nearby.

btw, i have some new home cooked food photos going up shortly. you've been warned my friend!
