Now most of you probably have read or heard this story by now but if you haven’t then here it is.
In a trial the first in America of its kind, a single mother took on the music Recording Industry of America and seven major music label giants for sharing 24 songs online.
There are more than 26,000 people who are being sued by the music giants and going on this first ruling they are now all going to be shacking in their boots and I am sure negotiating early settlements to the companies.
The single mother turned down an offer for a settlement to pay a few thousand dollars in fines but it has now cost her a whopping $US 220,000 or $9,166 dollars per song. The record companies could have actually tried to have her charged with sharing over 1,702 songs in an online folder she had and if they had the fines would have been in the millions.
The fine could have reached $US150,000 a song if the jury had found "willful" copyright infringement
She had apparently racked up legal bills in excess of $60,000 because she refused to be bullied and I am sure now she wishes she just paid the few thousand dollars.
This is scary as I remember way back, I am talking 5 years ago downloading and sharing god knows how many songs on Napster when I lived in Australia. I am happy I don’t have that computer anymore or any of those songs as these companies are on the warpath and look out to all who try and stand in their way.
