Today it was a wet day. We have had steady rain since mid afternoon and there have been a few heavy patches. It stopped thankfully at the end of work time and I got home without getting wet.
Sadly after getting home the skies opened up and it has rained steadily since with a small break here and there. So I sadly missed going to the park, I enjoy the view there and the hour and a half of exercise and chatting with my friends.
I caught up with some corrections that I have been putting off all week and also the attendance sheets for school so I didn’t waste the time.
When it rains here my little street gets all the water from all the other streets water as we are at the lowest point. All the other streets have a good fall that eventually comes our way and this causes minor flooding most times and when we really get the rain major flooding, major as in I cannot get the motorbikes out as it’s too deep for them and would flood the motors.
So I stood outside for a little while and watched the rain falling, it’s really quiet nice doing that sometimes, very relaxing and peaceful. We haven’t had a lot of rain yet and it has also been very cool. Not as hot as it usually would be. Last night we slept with the windows open and without a fan, and it was cold enough to snuggle under the duvet and not feel hot. The weather has been strange compared to the last few years.
The 44 gallon drums are full.My lovely adopted lane dog “Mew” is a lovely dog and she was out wandering around in the rain. She was even out in the foot deep water on the street watching a man catching fish that had escaped from overflowing drains and into the street. You will often see people doing this in the flooded street with little nets ready to scoop up their catch.
The road went a good foot underwater and it wasn’t really heavy rain only in a few places but it was constant. The Ubon council just put new drains all through my street 5 months back but it hasn’t made a difference by the looks of it.
When you look up one of the little streets that run onto mine you can see that half way up it is dry and there isn’t any water as the fall of the road brings it all my way but again it never has been a major problem in the 2 years, well not yet and hopefully won’t be fingers crossed.
The rain doesn’t stop people going out or coming home and a flooded street isn’t a problem either. You just keep the motorbike at a steady pace and hopefully the motorbike doesn’t stop. This girl lives next door and her little pink Mio was acting as a good boat today.
A young girl was riding her bicycle up and down the street and looked very happy and soaked head to toe. The only bad things are idiots in cars who go screaming through the water and send surges of water into people houses. My place I don’t have to worry as the water has to come up a very long way to reach my house and it would cause a major flood to do that.
Luckily we had plenty of food in stock from yesterdays outing to the market and Noot cooked a nice stir fry with pork and vegetables and a potato and chicken soup. It was very nice and good to eat home made food again. Tomorrow night I will be a bachelor as Noot is going to her village where she was grew up about 80 kilometres away and I am too busy too go as I have to teach extra class students at home to keep the money ticking over in the bank.
This is what I call easy money as the kids who study are great and the lessons go so fast and don’t feel like they are being dragged out and you are always looking at a clock to see when the class ends.
I am not sure if I will attempt to burn something in the kitchen or just go a couple of hundred metres and spend 40-50 baht. That’s the big problem facing me for tomorrow night. Man my life is full of worries. North east Thailand is full these dilemmas.
Brunty.

Still early in the Rainy Season but we are getting a lot of street flooding, even with short duration heavy rains. In 6 years living in Ubon this is the worst I have seen. There has been a lot of cement work done on the drainage system throughout the city but for some reason it seems worse not better. Gonna be a long long wet season this year.
excellent photos and reporting Brunty. you should get a flickr.com account and use the flickr photos in the blog because that would do justice to your photos (check out the photos in my blog, which are hosted on flickr.com). your shots reminded me of a place where i used to live. after every flood i would go out in my jeep and push stalled cars out of deep puddles.
My vote, Kai yan, som tam and khao niao...makes me sad that I have to work in the US (Thailand does not come close to my salary) and see my wife every other month.
Great story and pictures, ever thought of photojournalism? I think it pays better than a teacher (but also involves writing copy).
I met my wife on assignment in Burilam...wish I could work full-time in LOS.

Hey Darwin. Yes, they did the same here Darwin and it could be worse as well. Like you said the rain hasn't even started yet. It could be a long wet season.
Hi MJ. I will check out flickr.com thanks for the information. Last year there were a few people who attempted to ride their motorbikes through the water that was too deep and of course ended up pushing them and also having to take them to get repaired.
Hi Mike. No it's something I haven't thought about. I am not sure if I would be any good at it. And I am sure that it would pay better than being a teacher that wouldn't be hard.
Burilam isn't too far away from me and is a nice area as well. I am happy living here in the LOS and earning a lot less than back in Australia is a small price to pay for happiness
