Thailand. Not Enough Hours in a Day. Isaan Country.

Where are all the hours of the day going? I am just running out of time everyday lately to do things I want to get done. The last 2 weeks there probably hasn’t been a night I have been in bed before 1am. I had planned tonight to get to bed a little earlier as I am feeling very tired and have been sleepy at work through the day. It’s a hard life keeping 2 fulltime blogs going.

Last night I bought a little shoe cabinet that also has shelves on the side. It was a bargain at the special price of 400 baht ($14.28 Australian) reduced from 699 baht ($25 Aus). So tonight I was planning to quickly knock it together after getting home from the park and then posting a few blogs and then hitting the sack and getting a good 8 hours sleep, but as usual things don’t always go to plan.
The new addition.

First off my cordless drill’s battery was flat. I hadn’t used it since I put our living room cabinets together a long time ago. So I put it on charge and started organizing everything ready to go. It was a very basic looking job and the instructions very easy to follow.

I have put all of our furniture together myself except for our bed. When I bought the bedroom package they delivered it all put together but when I seen the wardrobe cabinet and the terrible job they had done putting it together I told them to not unload it and bring me the kit form and I would do it myself. They looked at me like I was insane. I found screws that had been put in crooked and had broken through some of the joins and they hadn’t put in the little wooden toggles or used any glue. So I just said no thank you.
My self assembled stuff.

These 2 caused many frustrating moments

3 of our 5 fish tanks. Well their meant to be Noots fish.
Noot's sister Ben. No help at all. Watched dreaded Thai TV.

Why do Thai people do this? Why do they do such terrible work? Is it because they are on a really terrible minimum wage? I have watched them put furniture together in Big C and Tesco Lotus and it is interesting to see the shortcuts they take. Most Thais want to take the easy road and not do things properly.

I looked at a new house for sale a few months back and I was shocked to see the sub standard work. The massive gaps around windows and frames and doors, floor tiles were uneven all throughout the house and on and on. There is no way a real builder could have built this house.

Anyway I put my little shoe cabinet together in around an hour and it was very simple to do. The clothes wardrobe was a real test of patience and nerves and a few times I thought I was stupid taking the job on by myself but after 2 hours plus that was also finished and I was happy knowing it wouldn’t fall apart.

Most of the things I put together weren’t hard to do and only took a little planning before starting to assemble them. So now I am here late again trying to get posts finished for my blogs and also an internet connection that is really trying my patience as well.

For some reason every night around 9pm the internet starts dropping out. I have know idea why and all through the day there isn’t a problem at all. On Saturday and Sunday I have a great connection usually but come 9pm it goes crazy. I rang my ISP provider and I still haven’t had a technician call me to make an appointment. This is one thing that really pisses me off here in Ubon is really bad customer service by nearly all companies. It really is disgraceful here in Ubon and this is probably because Thai people never complain and just say ‘Mai Pen Rai’ never mind.

I think there are a few reasons this occurs here in Thailand.

Firstly, the workers who assemble are untrained and most likely get minimum wage. There doesn't seem to be any quality control so the products go out as is.

Secondly, from my experience living amongst Thai people they seem to be programmed to accept things. Seldom have I seen anyone demand quality service for their hard earned baht. Normally that wardrobe would be accepted with no questions asked no comments made.

Renters seem to accept problems in their house or apartment and don't want to bother the landlord. Landlords too, don't seem to be motivated to maintain their property if the money keeps coming in. I had some problems in a mansion when I first moved here. The landlord said she is busy and don't have time to deal with it. She also said why can't I just live there and not complain liek the other tenants. Hmmmmmm.

I would recommend you try TT&T. I had big problems with TOT service and as with the shoddy assembly it appears TOT gives shoddy service because they can. No motivation to improve or make it better. TT&T technicians have responded in a timely mannner and would even call back to follow up. Refreshing.

Yes, they looked a little shocked when I originally told them not to unload it into the house. They all had these stunned mullet looks.

They spoke to Noot in Thai and I just pointed out all the crap work and they dropped the bed off and then went back and came back with the do it yourself stuff.

That's the problem with many Thais is it's don't say anything, it's okay, never mind.

There is a lot of sub standard work that goes on and people accept it.

Well not this cranky little Farang. He uses his big belly and stands his ground although politley and not like a lunatic as I have seen before.

Yes, maintianence is a thing of non existence in Thailand. Don't worry about the sparks coming out of the wall and the water leaking from the roof and so forth. Never mind.

Ha ha good old Thailand. Brunty
