The restaurant is called “Fine Day” and parents of a student from Assumption own the business. I know the father and have played golf with him 3 or 4 times and he is a little crazy. He speaks hardly any English but comes out with some of the most unbelievable lines that I end up peeing myself laughing. He must have a book of slang sayings or gets some of them from movies. I remember one day I was on the golf course and I heard my name being yelled out, I was looking around and couldn’t see anyone but then I heard my name again and I seen him yelling out 2 holes across from me. When you play golf here in Thailand in Isaan country there is no such thing as quiet when people play shots. It just doesn’t happen.
Anyway the restaurant has a nice outside dining area and a small inside area. There are TV’s for the sports fanatics who cannot go without seeing the latest football (soccer) results, so that’s nearly all Thai men and the Thai dramas for the ladies as they might miss a fight or screaming match.
We sat outside last night and it was very humid but they had 3 fans to blow a little cooler air on us. I sat near Miss B who is like my Thai mum. She is a lovely lady who does everything she can to make us foreign teachers happy but also has the impossible task of doing everything the Director or Brother of the school wants done. Many times she comes to us saying something brother wants us foreigners to do and we simply say no and then she has to go back and relay or answers and this goes on all the time.
She comes out with some sayings. Last night she was telling us that when she was a young girl and in Pratom 6 (year 6) her mum couldn’t afford to buy her underwear. So she had to attend school many times without any on. Of course we were laughing but she kept saying I am serious and not joking and we knew that but couldn’t help but laugh.
The food was nice. We had whole backed fish in a chili sauce, a cashew and chicken dish, chicken with fresh vegetables and fried rice, Spicy Prawn Soup. The cashew and chicken dish was beautiful 10 out of 10 and also the chicken and fresh vegetables. The fish was nice but I have had a lot better. The fried rice was okay but it tasted a little dry and I had many pieces of uncooked rice that I crunched on. The spicy prawn soup wasn’t spicy at all, it was nice but I like mine with a bit of bite in the soup. Dessert was apple pie and apple crumble and both were really delicious. I hadn’t had an apple pie in the 2 years I have been here and an apple crumble for god knows how long. The apple crumble was really yummy ad so was the pie. The only thing missing was some vanilla ice-cream to melt over it.
The service was fantastic. The girls attending to us were very attentive as most Thai waiters and waitresses are. No one went thirsty and they did a really good job.
Prices at the restaurant are okay. Not expensive or cheap. Here you can have a good meal in a nice setting with great service at a reasonable price. There are other restaurants I like that are cheaper but the setting isn’t as nice.
I have to be careful as I am playing golf with the host tomorrow morning and if he finds the review and doesn’t like it I could be in big trouble.
