Thailand. Great News. Authorities to Clean up TV.

The Thai Cabinet on Tuesday approved a plan to ban TV programmes with content considered suitable only for adult viewers from going on air before 10pm.

Also TV programmes rated as having content appropriate for children aged between 13 and 18 years old, but with parental guidance required, must be broadcast after 8pm. Programmes rated as having content appropriate for those older than 18 can only be broadcast after 10pm.

This sounds fabulous to me because that means nearly every Thai drama that is on TV now will have to be screened after 10pm. These dramas are definitely not appropriate for young teens with the level of violence and crap that goes on in them.

I have never come across more annoying TV shows anywhere I have been. The constant high pitch screaming of Thai girls fighting with their boyfriends or family. Thai girls and men using guns and knives to shoot and stab victims. Scenes of attempted rape and drunkenness and on and on it goes.

The content of the shows is absolute dribble and it doesn't deserve to be on Thai TV and hopefully the cabinet will make these shows screen much later at night but I do believe that this is only my very wishful thinking.

I gave up on Thai TV long ago. The girls all acted like spoiled brats and the guys were all soft-spoken passives. Maybe clean up won't be as you envision. Those same things are on the news and front page of all the newspapers. I myself had to go with TrueVisions (formerly UBC) but now they are censoring a couple kissing, words like "crap" and bottles of beer. And every break in programming brings government propaganda or Academy Fantasia. The government seems to have full control of the entertainment media even paid subscription services. Just the other day I got appeared to be a mass unsolicited SMS on my mobile from the government requesting public calm. Amazing Thailand na.

Yes, the Thai government have so much control over public companies that it's not funny.

Like you said with the mass sms messages that were and still are being sent out to subscribers telling them not to join in protests.

I am sure that if the mobile phone companies don't agree to do it that they have been threatened with sanctions of some kind.

Just look at the ISP providers. They block sites on the recommendation of MTIC. It is something they don't have to do by law it's up too them.

But companies that don't block certain sites are threatened with reduced band widths and licence restrictions and so forth so another words they are being bribed by the current Junta.

As for Thai TV and what they do and don't censor is a joke. Like you said a bottle of beer and a smoke are censored but a man holding or pointing a gun to a persons head isn't.

Yes, life in amazing Thailand Brunty

Thai TV is the pitts. I have cable thankfully and even that isn't great but at least I can escape the screaming voices of Thai women fighting.
