Thailand. Alcohol Claims a British man Well before His Time.

Alcohol is the cause of so many deaths here in Thailand mostly through drink driving deaths but also other sad and silly ways.

Thai people seem to believe it's more of a right that they can get extremely drunk and then try and drive their cars or motorbikes at the speed of light and not care about the safety of their fellow country men and visitors.

Australia has drink driving problems but nothing like Thailand. If you put what we call a "Booze Buses" or roadside breath testing vans on the side of the roads here in Ubon Ratchathani for a weekend and manned them with police each night from 9pm until 6am the number of highly intoxicated people detected would be huge. I am sure of this 100%.

I have seen them breathe test a few people during festivals like Songkran or the Lenten Candle Festival but apart from that never. Actually come to think of it I never seen the police after 6pm at night they are never out patrolling the streets in Ubon. I can honestly say that in 2 years I have never seen a police operation being held at night.

Anyway this British man didn't die on the road but his wife said he was very drunk and when he was catching a river ferry in Bangkok he has fallen over the side of the ferry and drowned. A senseless death and he was only 34 way to young to die.

Alcohol is an evil in Thailand like gambling in Australia. It takes control of peoples lives and once it has hold of them they are usually unable to escape. I just hope they can do something to educate the people better to the dangers of alcohol and the destruction it causes families and victims.

Well that's my rant anyway.

Brunty.
