The restaurant is 200 metres from my house and it is one of the most popular BBQ places in Ubon. It is called “Oat” and you can have the 99 baht buffet ($3.50 Australian dollars) or order of the set menu.
The buffet is pretty good value and if you like seafood such as prawns and squid you can eat your moneys worth easily.
The BBQ is a small round aluminum dome shaped plate (see picture) and it is raised in the middle which also has little slits cut in the aluminum and around the base is like a moat. You fill with a stock to cook your vegetables and prawns and such.
For the BBQ the range of meats is endless from beef, pork, chicken, liver, hearts, offal and then all the seafood like prawns, squid, crab, seafood sticks and much more.
The buffet also includes fried chicken, chicken nuggets, spring rolls, prawn cutlets, French fries, fried frogs, salads and fried rice dishes and on and on.
Also fruit and biscuits and packets of chips and some candy as well.
And there are also desserts like the Thai ones below and also ice cream.
These you mix whatever ingredients you like together, some are like a jelly and others are corn and pumpkin or bread and beans. You spoon very sweet syrup over them and also a bitter tasting milk and then place a little crushed ice in the bowl and mix and yes, it does taste good.
All in all it is an okay meal. I enjoy seafood and I don’t mind the mucking around it takes to cook the meat and the seafood. The food tastes good and you can’t blame the chef if anything is over or under cooked.
The beer prices are 60 baht for a big Leo and 80 baht for a large Heineken. The service is good and there is always live music being played that is never too loud so you can talk to your girlfriend if she stops shoveling food into her mouth. Thai girls love to eat and eat.
So is it value for money? For me 7 out of 10 for my Thai girlfriend 10 out of 10 or better. I don’t know how any person doing buffets in Thailand make money when the Thai people, especially the girls eat like they do.
So if in Ubon Oat BBQ restaurant is definitely a place to go and try a Thai BBQ. It is situated near Big C and the weekend markets and every Tuk Tuk driver knows where it is. ( I think they should)
